Yorkshire Terriers

A Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog breed. Yorkshire terriers are also called Yorkies or Scotch Terriers. The Yorkie is one of the most popular dog breeds. The Yorshire Terrier is originally from Great Britain. Yorkies began as working dogs that were used to catch vermin in clothing mills. Eventually, they became pampered dogs of aristocrats. In the 1870’s, this dog breed was introduced to the United States. The Yorkshire Terrier was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1885.

Yorkshire Terriers are intelligent and generally easy to train. They do well with children and other pets. Some Yorkshire Terriers will try to dominate other dogs, even though the other dog is likely to be larger. Yorkies need to be properly socialized.

Yorkies have skulls that are somewhat flat on top. Their ears are pricked and V-shaped. The eyes of Yorkshire Terriers are dark and not too prominent. The tail of the Yorkshire Terrier is docked so that it is medium length. The tail is held slightly about the level of the back.

The coats of Yorkshire Terriers are long, straight, and silky. Yorkshire Terrier puppies are black and tan. Adult Yorkshire Terriers have steely blue coloring over the body while the head and ears are tan. Even though this dog breed has long hair, the grooming requirements are minimal. The coat can be kept healthy with regular brushing. These dogs are light shedders, so they are one of the more popular dog breeds for people with allergies.

Yorkshire Terriers are energetic dogs. They benefit from having a secure yard in which to run. However, they should not be left outside for very long during periods of cold weather. The average weight of Yorkshire Terriers is five to seven pounds. The height of this small dog breed averages seven to eight inches.

The average life span of the Yorkshire Terrier is twelve to fifteen years. Yorkshire Terriers are prone to some health conditions. Some Yorkies are susceptible to problems with the liver and pancreas. Yorkshire Terriers may also have luxating patella, allergies, and dental problems. Some Yorkshire Terriers have problems with blood glucose levels.
