Vizsla Dogs

Vizsla is a large dog breed that is known to be alert and active. The Vizsla dog breed is also known as the Hungarian Vizsla, Magyar Vizsla, Hungarian Pointer, and the Drotszoru Magyar Vizsla. As some of the other names for this dog breed imply, this dog breed is originally from Hungary. Vizsla dogs were used as hunting dogs by nomadic tribes.

The Vizsla dog breed is one of the more people oriented dog breeds. Vizsla dogs thrive on interaction and attention from their owners. The Vizsla dog is an energetic dog. They do best with an active family. The Vizsla dogs need daily exercise. A brief walk is not really enough exercise for a Vizsla dog. A significant walk, jog, or run can suit these dogs very well, but interactive play with their owners is an ideal part of their regular exercise.

If not well exercised and mentally stimulated, a Vizsla may develop some destructive behaviors. They are notorious for destructive chewing. Due to their significant need for exercise, Vizsla dogs are not well suited for living in an apartment.

Vizslas may bark if strangers approach the residence. Intelligent and eager to please, Vizsla dogs are relatively easy to train. Proper training and socialization help prevent shy, skittish, excitable, or neurotic behavior. Vizsla dogs generally get along well with children and other household pets.

Vizslas are only one color, a rusty gold color. They have short, sleek hair. The grooming needs for Vizslas are very low. Occasional brushing with a firm, bristle brush is all that is needed. Vizsla dogs are medium shedders that may require more frequent brushing at times. Dry shampoo may be used when necessary. The eye color is similar to the golden color of the coat. The ears of Vizsla dogs are somewhat long and hang beside the head.

The Vizsla dogs have an average weight of forty-five to sixty-five pounds. The average height of this large dog breed is twenty to twenty-six inches. Vizslas are susceptible to hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, seizures, and cancer. The average life span of Vizsla dogs is twelve to fifteen years.
