Rottweiler Dogs

Rottweiler dogs, sometimes called Rotties, are a strong, sturdy breed. Rottweilers are often used as police dogs or guard dogs. The Rottweiler is one of many dog breeds that originated in Germany. Rottweilers were used on farms for livestock control.

The weight of a Rottweiler can be up to one hundred thirty-five pounds. Rottweilers can be twenty-two to twenty-seven inches tall. Rottweilers are muscular dogs. They have dark, expressive eyes. The ears of Rottweiler dogs are triangular. The lining of the mouth is dark as well as the inside of the mouth. Many people dock the tails of Rottweilers and have the dewclaws removed.

A Rottweiler dog has a short coat. The colorings of Rottweilers are black with tan or mahogany markings. Rottweilers with deficient hair genes may have reddish coloring instead of black. Regular brushing is the only grooming that is typically needed for Rottweiler dogs. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient except for during times of heavy shedding. During periods of heavier shedding, more frequent brushing can help reduce the spread of dog hair throughout the home.

People tend to think of Rottweilers as aggressive dogs. Dog aggression is most commonly due to poor training, poor socialization, or training to encourage aggressive behavior. Rottweilers do best with owners that are experienced with training dogs. A properly trained and socialized Rottweiler is a loyal and affectionate dog. Well-trained Rottweiler dogs that have been socialized often do well with children, other dogs, and other household pets.

Rottweilers can be very protective of the family which makes it a natural guard dog. Rottweilers need plenty of exercise. They tend to be inactive indoors. The Rottweiler needs at least one daily walk to make sure it is getting proper exercise. Time to run in a fenced yard can help provide the dog with sufficient exercise.

The Rottweiler is a large dog breed, therefore their life expectancy is shorter than other dogs. The Rottweiler typically lives nine to twelve years. Female Rottweilers have large litters, commonly up to twelve puppies. The Rottweiler is susceptible to some medical problems including thyroid conditions, heart problems, eye infections, allergies, bloat, and seizures.
