Pugs

The history of the Pug dog breed is not well-documented. Pugs are thought to be from Asia. Some believe Pugs are from Pekinese dog breed while others think Pugs are from bulldogs. Pugs are short, cobby dogs with a tail the curls that lies on the dog’s back. The dog breed has prominent eyes. Pug dogs have relatively large heads. The ears are small and soft. Pugs have wrinkles on the skin of their faces and heads.

Pugs are small dogs, typically weighing fourteen to eighteen pounds and standing ten to eleven inches high. Pug dogs are sturdy. Pugs shed all year long, so it is not a recommended breed for people with allergies to dogs. The coloring of a Pug can be apricot-fawn, black, or silver with a black muzzle or mask. They have short coats.

Daily brushing is recommended to keep the coat healthy and reduce shedding. Because of their short muzzles and short coats, Pugs are heat sensitive and should not be in the sun or in stuffy conditions for extended periods of time. The folds of skin on the Pugs face should be cleaned often to prevent infection.

Pugs are commonly playful. Though Pugs are intelligent and generally easy to train, housebreaking is a common challenge for an owner of a Pug dog. Stubbornness is a common personality trait of Pugs. Pug dogs are not prone to aggressive behavior, but may do so without proper training. They usually get along with children and other pets.

Pugs are not especially active dogs. They often get enough exercise within the house or by running in a fenced yard, but they can benefit from occasional walks. A Pug dog would prefer a short walk as opposed to long ones.

Pugs are prone to certain physical problems and diseases. Pug dogs often have a hypersensitivity to medications and chemicals. Pugs are at increased risk of entropion, liver problems, epilepsy, PRA, Less-Perthes, and encephalitis. The eyes of Pugs are susceptible to cataracts, injuries, or infections. On average, Pugs live to be twelve to thirteen years old. Overeating is a common problem for Pugs.
