Dogs can be fearful or anxious when faced with unfamiliar people and environments. Socializing a dog helps build its confidence. A socialized dog has a greater tolerance for new people and placed. A dog that is well socialized is more likely to be confident and calm in new social situations.
In an ideal situation, socializing begins when the dog is a puppy. If a puppy grows up accustomed to new experiences, it is likely to accept those new situations and people without feeling threatened. A puppy owner can socialize the puppy by exposing the puppy to new situations and people on a regular basis.
The best age to socialize a puppy is between three and twelve weeks old. Positive social experiences during this time will often have a lasting effect on the puppy’s attitude towards people and new environments. Unfortunately, many puppy owners isolate their dogs with the exception of the initial veterinarian visits. So, a puppy may learn to associate pain or discomfort with new people and environments.
It’s important for the puppy owner to counteract the potentially negative associations with positive ones. Visiting friends and relatives who will be kind to the puppy is one way to create positive social experiences. Walking the puppy and making the walks a positive experience is another positive social situation that can build socialization. The process of socialization is continuous. A dog that becomes isolated may experience social behavior changes.
If a puppy owner provides many positive social experiences in the first twelve weeks of life, that is not enough to guarantee that the puppy will remain socialized throughout its life. A dog can become aggressive or fearful in social situations if the socialization process is not continued. Insecurity due to drastic changes in the dog’s environment can also prompt fearful reactions to social situations that could result in aggressive behavior.
Once a dog is grown, it is more difficult to socialize the dog, but it is not impossible. Often, a dog will have an aggressive or fearful reaction to a particular situation, gender of person, or other animals. A dog owner may be able to replace the fear or aggression with a positive feeling if they gradually expose the animal to that situation and make it positive by giving dog treats. This way, the dog’s previous attitude towards that stimulus may become a positive one.
