Dog Beds

Dog beds come in a wide range of variations in complexity of design and cost. Cheap dog beds are little more than thin mat or an oversized pillow. Simple dog beds may include features like being heated. More complex beds can look more like a small mattress. Some mattress-like dog beds even feature a pillow top. One kind of complex dog bed is orthopedically designed.

A dog owner should not assume that a dog bed is a requirement for dog health. In fact, some dog beds may be unhealthy for a dog. Dog beds are made out of different materials. Some dogs may have an allergic reaction to the materials of the bed. If the dog begins to have sneezing, watery eyes, rash, or itching after a dog bed is introduced, the dog owner want to check to see it the dog is allergic to its components by removing the bed and seeing if the dog’s symptoms subside.

If the dog’s symptoms go away and then return when the bed is reintroduced, the dog may be allergic to something in the bed. There are dog beds made from organic and hypoallergenic materials that may be used. Organic, hypoallergenic dog beds often avoid chemical dyes and materials that may cause dog allergies.

Is a dog bed necessary for dog health? If the dog normally sleeps on a hard surface, a dog bed may be a good idea. Sleeping on hard surfaces, especially cement or tile, have been associated with the development of some joint problems in puppies and dogs. As a dog ages, the dog may benefit from having a dog bed. If the dog develops joint problems, the veterinarian may recommend the use of a dog bed.

If the dog appears to have joint stiffness upon waking, a dog bed may help alleviate some of the stress on the dog’s joints. Orthopedic dog beds provide support to reduce pressure on the joints. Unfortunately, an adult or senior dog that has never slept on a dog bed may reject it and opt to sleep on the floor anyway. Therefore, it may be best to provide a simple bed to a puppy or young dog so that if it becomes necessary, they may accept the dog bed without incident.
