Basenji Dogs

The Basenji is a dog breed that originated from Zaire. The Basenji is known as the Congo Dog in Zaire. The exact nature of its origin may be speculative, but it is thought to have originated as a hunting dog used by the Congo pygmies. In the 1930’s, England was introduced to the Basenji dog breed. The Basenji dog breed may be descended from common dogs from Ancient Egypt.

Basenji dogs are a small dog breed. A full grown Basenji dog is sixteen to seventeen inches. The Basenji dogs weigh an average of twenty to twenty-five pounds. This small dog does need significant exercise. A Basenji dog that is insufficiently exercised and lacks mental stimulation is prone to destructive behavior. If a Basenji dog must be left alone for a few hours, it may be best to exercise the dog beforehand. They are energetic dogs that should have more daily exercise than a short walk provides. Basenji dogs get much of their exercise indoors too.

This dog breed may not be well suited for young children unless the dog has been well socialized or raised with the children. The children should be taught how to play with the dog without teasing the dog or being rough. Basenji dogs do not do well with other pets. Some will do okay with pets if they have been properly socialized together. Consistent and firm training is needed since Basenji dogs can become domineering. They typically respond well to proper training.

The Basenji has a naturally furrowed brow that makes the dog appeared worried. The Basenji dog is a shorthaired dog. The coloring of the Basenji can be black and tan, black and brindle, brindle, or red. All the colorings can have white markings. The Basenji dog does not shed much. Basenji dogs clean themselves like cats. Occasional brushing and keeping the nails trimmed are the typical grooming requirements for the Basenji dog breed.

The average life span of Basenji dogs is eleven to thirteen years. This dog breed may be susceptible to problems with their eyes, thyroid gland, kidneys, and digestive system. Basenji dogs may also be prone to hip dysplasia.
